The History of Portugal

The area of the Iberian peninsula now known as Portugal was occupied by the Lusitanos, who are believed to be the direct ancestors of the Portuguese people.

Invaded initially and occupied by the Romans it was later occupied by the Moors, who controlled it until the eleventh century, when Ferdinand, ruler of the Kingdom of Castilla and Leon from Spain conquered much of the territory.

During the following two hundred years, the last of the Moors were driven out and the frontiers of Portugal created. Portugal first became recognised as an independent entity in 1143 of King Alfonso Henriques.

The Weather in Portugal

Portugal has a maritime climate and temperatures that vary depending on the elevation and closeness to the coast. The summers are hot and long in the south, and the winters are moderate. In the north west summers are shorter and wetter, while, in general, winter temperatures are mild.
