Olhao lies on the coast reasonably close to Faro and at the end of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. Architecturally the town is well known for an older quarter where the flat terraced roofs and straight box-shaped chimneys show a definite Moorish flavour in their style. Another important curiosity to the visitor is the fish market held every day in a long building on the waterfront.

Relatively unaffected by tourism, Olhao is the second largest town on the Algarve, a few miles east of its chief town, Faro. The town's main industry is its sardine and tuna fisheries.

One of the Algarve´s main fishing ports, Olhao has square whitewashed houses with flat roof terraces and chimneys that are evocative of Moorish architecture.

But the town´s main attraction is its market, one of the most animated and picturesque of the Algarve, with an enormous variety of seafood but also local farmers selling such products as fruit, honey and live chickens.
